Looking for Hardware for Magnetics Cores?

Hardware accessories are available for a variety of Magnetics' core types.   Bobbins, also known as coil formers, are available for most ferrite geometries in many types: plain bobbins, printed circuit bobbins (available pinned and unpinned),  and  surface mount bobbins.  Mounting clamps  (clips) are also available.  Toroid mounts, toroid headers, and toroid cups are available for mounting wound inductor, choke, or transformer coils.  Tuning assemblies, which consist of a trimmer base, trimmer screw assembly, washer and nut, are also available.

There are a couple of ways to find the corresponding hardware for a core on www.mag-inc.com

If you know the type of hardware (i.e.  bobbin, printed circuit bobbin, clamp, etc.) you can visit the hardware page and get a complete list of the type.

If you have the specific Magnetics  hardware part number or a corresponding core part number, you can enter it into the Part Number Search, found in the upper right hand corner of each page.  The results will display  the specific hardware part number or all corresponding hardware for a given core.

Dear Kimberly,
Welcome to "In the Loop".  This issue features an article on how to protect yourself from counterfeit cores, a new addition to Magnetics' distribution team, a look at MyMagnetics customer website, and upcoming trade shows.

Buyer Beware

When you specify a  Magnetics powder core, how do you know you are getting a genuine Magnetics core?  Are you getting the core quality, consistency, and ultimately, the performance, that your design requires?

While the substitution of counterfeit cores does not appear to be a wide-spread problem, with industry leadtimes extending due to increased demand, the availability of inferior cores is tempting suppliers trying to meet deadlines.  Recently Magnetics confirmed, based on a customer's suspicion, that counterfeit Magnetics' cores were being used in a design that specificied Magnetics' cores.

Magnetics takes several steps to visually distinguish our  cores from others.  Our powder core toroids are  color-coded for material; black finish for Kool Mµ®, gray finish for MPP, khaki finish for High Flux and brown for XFLUX®.  In addition, all Magnetics powder cores are stamped with a specific lot/date code based on core size and shape.

There are also steps you can take to improve the  chances that you will receive Magnetics cores when specified.

  • Verify that your cores are always supplied from either Magnetics or an authorized Magnetics distributor.  Not all companies that claim to sell Magnetics products are authorized to do so.  A list of authorized distributors can be found on our website.

  • Inconsistency in performance can be a warning sign.  There should be minimal variation from lot to lot.

  • Verify that the finished component meets specified parameters including; overall dimensions, inductance, the number of turns on the core, etc.

Just one failure in the field can cause  monetary consequences and damage a supplier's reputation.  If  you have reason to suspect that counterfeit cores are being substituted in your design, contact Magnetics' Application Engineering.
